3 Warning Signs of a Faulty Walk-In Cool Room to Watch Out For

by Audrey Ramos

A faulty commercial cool room can halt business operations, lead to food wastage and ruin your business reputation. Whether you run a restaurant or sell fresh food product, you need reliable refrigeration equipment to maintain the quality of your products. For this reason, you must be on the lookout for potential signs of faults before they affect your business. With this in mind, here are three warning signs that your walk-in cool room requires immediate repairs.

Temperature fluctuations

Temperature fluctuations in a walk-in cool room can result from habits such as opening the refrigerator too often. However, if you notice these fluctuations even when there isn't a lot of activity in the fridge, you need to watch out for the following problems:

  • Faulty thermostat sensors: Thermostat sensors detect temperature changes. When the cool room is too warm, the sensors trigger the cooling system to turn on and lower the temperatures. If the sensors aren't working, your fridge may become too warm or too cold.
  • Dirty or worn compressor coils: Compressor coils release heat to the outdoors and keep your cool room cold. If the coils are dirty or clogged, they won't sufficiently eliminate the heat. Instead, warm air will recirculate into the fridge.
  • Worn door seal: A cool room's door should be airtight to prevent air circulation between the refrigerator and the rest of the space. If the door has a worn seal, it will let cold air out and allow warm air in, leading to temperature fluctuations in the cool room.
  • Faulty electrical components: Faulty electrical components can throw your commercial refrigerator into a frenzy. They can affect the cooling capabilities of the walk-in freezer or cause it to fail.

If refrigerated food starts to thaw or collects too much frost, check for the above faults in your cool room.

Odour problems

When food goes stale in your cool room, you may notice some unusual odours. Usually, one can distinguish food-related odours from non-food smells. If you detect an odour that isn't coming from the food, your refrigerant may be leaking. Refrigerant is the fluid that facilitates the cooling process. It has a sweet, chloroform smell. If you notice this odour in your cool room, call for immediate repairs. Refrigerant leaks can prevent the refrigerator from cooling efficiently, which may reduce the quality of your stored product.

Water puddles and damp flooring

Water puddles and damp floors signal air leaks in your cool room. Air leaks cause heat exchange, which can lead to condensation. Condensation occurs as small water puddles on your freezer shelves, floors or walls. Check your door seal for wear. Also, inspect your wall, ceiling and floor insulation for wear and inefficiencies.

Getting the Job Done with Construction Contractors

Hello, my name is Carl and this is my construction and contractor blog. I do not work in the construction business but last year, my wife and I had a lot of work carried out on our summer home which is located on the Gold Coast. Winter storms had damaged the roof and a couple of seabirds had made a nest in there. The place was a real mess but thankfully the contractors did a great job of repairing the roof and fixing up the damage to the loft space. I learn a lot during the repairs so I decided to start a new blog. Enjoy!
