5 Ways to Save Money on Your Renovation

by Audrey Ramos

Renovations can be expensive, but luckily, there's lots of ways to save. Looking for ways to cut costs with your remodel? Then, check out these tips.

1. Do Some of It Yourself

One of the easiest ways to cut costs is to handle some of the labour yourself. Make a list of what you want done during the remodel, and identify anything that you can do yourself. Ideally, you shouldn't tackle jobs that you aren't capable of doing — paying someone to fix a big mistake may be more expensive than just having a pro handle it in the first place.

2. Look for Repurposed Items

If you are putting in new cabinets, flooring or other additions, try looking for used items. That can be cheaper than buying new stuff, and used items often have more character. Charity shops, estate sales and garage sales are an ideal place to start.

3. Sell Your Old Stuff

In addition to buying other people's old building materials, you may want to sell the items you are no longer using. For example, if you are updating the bathroom countertop and replacing the sink, you can try to sell both of those old items. It can take a bit of time to make the listing, field emails and meet with buyers, but it's a great way to lower overall costs.

4. Focus on Long-Term Savings

Don't just focus on saving money through the remodel itself. Also, consider ways to create long-term savings. For instance, if you want to lower your electricity bills, you may want to increase the size of windows, add skytubes to your roof or hang reflective materials for light to bounce off of throughout your home. Additionally, you may want to improve insulation to lower utility bills.

In other cases, you may want to focus on remodeling elements that promise to give the house a boost in value. In particular, many buyers  look for extra bathrooms or bedrooms, so adding elements like that can help make your remodel cost effective.

5. Talk With Your Renovator About Supplies

As suggested above, there are many cases where hiring a renovator can help you save money, in that it helps you avoid costly errors or accidental damage to your home. However, these professionals can also help you save money on materials. In some cases, they have great connections to quality wholesale deals.

Getting the Job Done with Construction Contractors

Hello, my name is Carl and this is my construction and contractor blog. I do not work in the construction business but last year, my wife and I had a lot of work carried out on our summer home which is located on the Gold Coast. Winter storms had damaged the roof and a couple of seabirds had made a nest in there. The place was a real mess but thankfully the contractors did a great job of repairing the roof and fixing up the damage to the loft space. I learn a lot during the repairs so I decided to start a new blog. Enjoy!
