How to Identify High-Quality Timber for Home Construction

by Audrey Ramos

Timber has been the most reliable item in home construction for many years. It is a sustainable, durable and flexible material to work with for many different structures. As a result, timber has been the top choice for designing frames, walls, floors, and doors in many different homes.

When looking into timber for sale to use in home construction, there are several important factors to consider. Not all timber is the same and it is important to know what makes a particular piece of wood stand out in terms of quality. Therefore, consider the following factors when looking into timber for sale.

Appearance and color

It is important to find timber that is fresh and ready to use for construction. A fresh piece of timber normally has a hard and shiny surface. Its color is also slightly darker than most other shades. When inspecting timber for sale, make sure it is free of defects such as shakes or knots along its structure.

Durability

One of the defining features of timber in home construction is its durability. It is important that any timber for sale maintains its durable characteristics at all times. The timber should also be capable of resisting chemicals, fungi, insects, and other materials.

When selecting timber to use for a home building, make sure it has been tested for durability and has been purchased from a reputable supplier.

Elasticity and fire resistance

Timber for sale should also be elastic and resistant to fire. Elasticity means that the timber can return to its original shape after a load exerted on it causes a deformation. This is particularly important for the home because forces such as strong winds, heavy rains, and other inclement weather can cause timber frames to bend out of their natural shape. If this happens, the timber should maintain its elasticity and return to its original framework as soon as possible.

Fire resistance is also important to consider. The timber should be dense and offer a certain level of insulation against flames from forest fires and other external hazards.

Smell

When looking to purchase timber, you should pay close attention to its smell. Good quality timber has a sweet and appealing smell. If you notice that the timber is giving off any foul odors or decaying scents, this usually points to timber that is in the decaying process. Therefore, make good use of your nose when looking into timber for sale.

Getting the Job Done with Construction Contractors

Hello, my name is Carl and this is my construction and contractor blog. I do not work in the construction business but last year, my wife and I had a lot of work carried out on our summer home which is located on the Gold Coast. Winter storms had damaged the roof and a couple of seabirds had made a nest in there. The place was a real mess but thankfully the contractors did a great job of repairing the roof and fixing up the damage to the loft space. I learn a lot during the repairs so I decided to start a new blog. Enjoy!
